Highlights from the 2018 National Education Summit

The 2018 Summit began with a rousing, inspiring greeting from Joseph Waler, Principal of Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin School who set down a challenge with his presentation theme “We’re the only SND educators our students will ever know!” Joe’s opening session was followed by a beautiful mass celebrated by the Most Reverend Nelson J. Perez, Bishop of the Diocese of Cleveland. A short social after mass was the prelude to the SND Education Recognition Dinner where seven outstanding educators and the leadership of a Toledo-area educational ministry were presented with very special awards:

Day 2 began with a wonderful prayer service led by the students, faculty and administrators of Cleveland Catholic Central High School and was followed by a keynote presentation by Sr. Melannie Svoboda, SND  – a gifted author and speaker. Sr. Melannie’s enthusiastic call to action was followed by a series of dynamic breakout sessions that were designed to encourage thoughtful discussion and provide valuable professional development. Day 2 ended with a powerful and moving art performance with Kelly Croy – speaker, author and educator. Working to music, Kelly created a beautiful chalk drawing of a lighthouse which he then enhanced with computer animation. His remarks after the art event were heartwarming and inspiring and provided a perfect ending to the day.

Day 3 began with yet more worthwhile breakout sessions and ended with a lovely Marian reflection and final words of encouragement and motivation by Fr. Thomas Elewaut, a former education and school leader and current Pastor of San Buenaventura Mission in California. Overall it was an amazing, transformational Summit – one in keeping with the SND’s vision of educational excellence for the transformation of individuals and society.
