Celebrate Responsible Care for Creation

The Season of Creation is an annual celebration of prayer and action to encounter and protect creation. The season began September 1st, the Day of Prayer for Creation, and runs through October 4th, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of ecology in many traditions. This year the theme is biodiversity, “God’s Web of Life.” It offers the unique value of each creature in God’s wondrously complex web of life.

Committed to responsible care for all of creation, Sisters Helen Burdenski, Alice Dugar, Margaret Friel, Jacquelyn Gusdane, Paulamarie Lacy, Nancy MacDermott and Marie Manning designed a program entitled One Step TOGETHER, encompassing prayer, education, and action. On September 18th, seventy sisters and lay people joined together in celebration on the Chardon Notre Dame campus and addressed the topic of single-use plastics. Their goal was to identify an action that sustains God’s Web of Life and was possible for all gathered to adopt. This celebration concludes with a visual prayer service on the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi.

On September 20th, Catholic Schools for Peace and Justice, a Cleveland diocesan organization of 20 Catholic high schools working together for peace and justice, organized an alternative to the walk-out taking place at noon in schools across the nation. In the late afternoon between 4:00 – 6:00 p.m., they held a brief prayer service, poster making, and speaker on the human effects of climate change. This was followed by a walk from Sagrada Familia Parish to Edgewater Park on the near westside of Cleveland. The public witness CSPJ for better protection of the earth demonstrated their pledge to care and preserve creation.
